Building the Perfect Yeast Blend

The cancellation of HomebrewCon Nashville was a bummer, but obviously was the right choice for many reasons.

Bootleg had events planned at our lab, two seminars to present, multiple Nashville brewery collaborations and the annual Milk the Funk meet-up (at which we collect sour beer dregs to propagate a unique, one-off blend). And on top of that seeing all of our homebrewing friends from around the country…it was going to be, in a word, dope.

Thankfully the online version of HomebrewCon 2020 did not disappoint.

My presentation, Yeast Blending: Building the Perfect New England IPA, was the perfect opportunity to evangelize about my love for blending yeasts in homebrewing.

Thanks to the good folks at the American Homebrewers Association (AHA), HomebrewCon Online is available now to stream for everyone who purchased a ticket.

A teaser of what you might have missed from my presentation:

  • What do you get out of blending yeast? Better attenuation, improved ABV tolerance and most importantly…a totally unique flavor that you created!
  • Maintaining multiple cultures sounds hard. How do I do it? If you can maintain your quarantine sourdough culture you can maintain beer yeast! Get ready to start your starters!
  • Yeah, but…how does this help me make a PERFECT NEIPA?! As a homebrew wizard, you get to choose the attributes you desire from individual yeast strains. The alchemy comes from blending based on different cell density ratios to achieve your perfect beer.
  • Yeah, but is there more? You betcha.

If you’re a homebrewer and not already an AHA member, I’d encourage you to join.  It’s the main organization advocating for homebrewing legislation on the local and national level, in addition to providing amazing forums and content via its website or Zymurgy magazine.

AHA members who didn’t attend HomebrewCon Online should get access to my presentation and all the others sometime next year.

BUT THAT’S NOT ALL

To celebrate the unique art of yeast blending, we’ve dropped fresh packs of a couple of my favorite clean yeast blends: NEEPAH & Saison Parfait! While you’re there, you can pick up fresh packs of our popular OSLO & Classic New England cultures (not blends!).

If you see a homebrew culture available on our website, it is currently in inventory and should ship within one week of ordering.

Homebrew cultures qualify for our new Flat Rate shipping and are shipped via FedEx 2 Day Air. No matter how many total packs you order, it’ll be one low cost!

AND to help negate the intensity of the summer heat, we’ve added the option to throw additional ice packs in with your homebrew culture shipment.

Check out our list of currently available cultures here.

I look forward to seeing everyone next year in San Diego!
